Ok my bird loving friends, please help me identify this gorgeous predator visiting (I hope he's just visiting) the garden. Hopefully he'll scare off the squirrels and not snack on my hummingbird friends!

  1. Cooper's Hawk, or possibly a Sharp-Shinned Hawk. Cooper's are larger than Sharp-Shinned, and the one in the picture looks pretty big. Their major food source is pigeons, robins, jays and mockingbirds, so the hummingbirds are safe. Read about you in the SJ Merc--good luck with your garden!
